About the Opportunity    

Reporting to the City Sustainability Manager, this role is responsible for the leadership and management of a range of programs and services that contribute to the delivery of the City of Palmerston Community Plan including: Urban and environmental planning, management, and strategies, sustainability strategy, waste management including community engagement and education, protection and restoration of natural ecosystems and emergency management.

The environment and sustainability is a key theme of our Community Plan, which covers encouraging sustainable development, ensuring planning aligns with other planning in the region, and participating in NT planning guidelines to promote green infrastructure.

The Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Project management and professional input into planning, sustainability and environmental management initiatives.
  • Ensure timely submissions are made on behalf of Council in relation to development applications, planning scheme amendments, strategic planning and other planning-related activities.
  • Represent Council in relation to activities relevant to the role.
  • Drawing on technical knowledge on planning, facilitate Council's input to the Territory’s planning process with a focus on appropriate land use planning and urban design principles across Palmerston that contribute to Palmerston being ‘A Place for People’.
  • Liaise and engage with Officers of the Northern Territory Government the wider planning and development industry.
  • Provide strategic and innovative leadership on relevant matters. Prepare strategic plans and policies for consideration by Council.
  • Coordinate and deliver environmental planning, sustainability, environmental management and community engagement programs and activities as required.
  • Coordinate waste management activities including administration of kerbside waste collection and waste transfer station contracts and community engagement and education goals and actions under the Sustainability Strategy.
  • Provide leadership and direction to facilitate and implement goals and actions under the Sustainability Strategy.
  • Manage projects, including the coordination of consultants and other stakeholders to deliver complex and multi-disciplinary outcomes.
  • Apply judgement and problem-solving skills to consider and analyse complex options.
  • Research and analyse environmental and land use issues and prepare accurate reports and plans.
  • Provide high level customer service in relation to all activities, including resolving complex issues.
  • Prepare correspondence and undertake administrative duties relevant to the role and as directed.
  • Work across the organisation and ensure cross collaboration on projects and activities that span different work areas.
  • Coordinate and deliver community engagement and education activities as required.
  • Be part of an Emergency Management team.

To be considered for this exciting opportunity, applicants will have:

  • Tertiary qualifications in Town, Urban and/or Environmental Planning (or equivalent) with experience in urban and/or environmental planning, or diploma level qualifications with a minimum of five years’ experience in a similar role
  • Understanding of the NT Planning Act, Regulations, Planning Scheme, and other legislation as relevant to the role
  • Experience in sustainability, environmental or land management
  • Proficient in the use of computer software and systems
  • Demonstrated ability to apply collaborative skills in consulting across a range of disciplines
  • Demonstrated skills in problem solving and resolving complex issues
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the preparation of planning correspondence and reports
